Mix1 Rider Uses Cyclocross For Offseason Training

Fall is generally the off season for most of the guys as we are a road racing team, so many of the riders are ready for a rest after a long season on the road. But not all members of the Mix1 team are looking for a rest. Team member David K. is one of the braves souls who likes Cyclocross, or simply Cross, as a form of off season traing for road racing. For those who have not seen Cross it is similar to Steeplechase on bikes. most of the course is ridable, but some part are designed to require you to get off and run. As such it is a good cross training activity for road racers. Here are a couple of pictures David supplied from 303 Cycling , from Boulder Racing's cross race this past weekend at the Boulder Reservoir. The pictures do not do the day justice as it was in the mid 30's and snowing on and off all day. David can be seen railing it in the sand (which is very hard to do). Even harder is cleaning your bike after the race! Maybe that is why we are a road racing team, we hate cleaning our bikes!

Team Photo

We recently got our 2009 team photos done. We were a little late in the year, or conversely we got a good jump on 2010. Here is a nice one of the full team (well not exactly everyone, but all the guys who were there that day).

Thanks to Bruce for organizing it and to our team photographer Peleton Photos. For a complete look at the photos follow the to our team album:

Giving Back

Well after a weekend of snow more normal weather returned and we got out to take care of the fall clean up on our Adopt A Road. 10 of the team members showed up early on Saturday AM and we got our stretch of road cleaned in about 2 hours. The guys did such a good job back in June, this time was easier! Pictured above are Jeff, CJ, Jim, Chris, Bill, Matt, Henrik, and Pete. Not pictured are Pete L. and our photographer Bruce.

Many hands made the work go quickly as Chris, Matt, Jim and CJ work the west side of the road. As you can tell it was a beautiful fall day. We did not find anything too exciting, but did come across a couple of dead animals, lots of cans, 1 cell phone and a check for $835. Thanks again to Jim T. who organized it and for providing the all important donuts and coffee. For any 2009 team members who missed both days, we know who you are and you are on for 2010!

mix1 In The News

There has been lots of good news for our title sponsor, mix1, of late and we wanted to help share it. For the first time mix1 has taken an outside investment and raised $6,000,000 from Highlands Capital. Highlands has made other Boulder investments, including Pharmaca Integrated Pharmacy, and the funds will be used to continue the growth of the number of stores mix1 is available in. Back in 2007 it was only 400 stores and by the end of 2009 it will be close to 12,000.

Here is the press release: http://www.mix1life.com/Files/press/mix1%20Funding%20Announcement%20FINAL%20090209.pdf

Additionally mix1 was featured this week on the local CBS news affiliate and also received coverage in the well respected Denver Business Journal. Links to the TV coverage and newspaper article are below:

Giving Back To The Community

In 2009 the Mix1 Masters Cycling Team decided to do the Adopt A Road program and adopted 61st Street (which becomes 63rd) between Valmot and Jay Road, in north Boulder. It was a great way to give back and support cleaning up the roads we all love to ride on. The signs went up and we needed to do our spring and fall cleanup. The photo is from our spring clean up and included LT, Larry, Matt S, Jim T, Marcel, and Kevin H. A big thanks to Jim T. for taking the lead on this and getting us organised.
Today was the date for our fall clean up and wouldn't you know it, it was also the first major snow storm of the winter. At 9 AM this morning it was 20 degrees out, windy, and blowing snow all over. So we pushed it back a week and hope to be out there cleaning up our stretch of road next weekend.

35 Plus Team Adds 2 New Riders

The Mix1 Masters Cycling Team is pleased to announce they have added 2 new riders to their 35 Plus squad for 2009, with the addition of Josh Barnett and Matt Gates. Josh is a long time Colorado racer, who has raced for years with several current members of our team (CJ, Jim & Larry), and is coming back to racing after a few years off while starting a family. Matt is newer to Colorado, but if you ask him, he is never leaving. He comes from a strong race background and several current members noticed Matt on local group rides and end of the season races.

Here is some more information from both Josh and Matt, in their own words:

Matt Gates: I started racing as a junior back in 1989 and was fortunate to race for an awesome team that employed team tactics. We won almost every race we entered because we rode as a team. I took some time off for school and then came back and raced as a Cat. 1 from 1994 until 2005. Then I 'retired', moved out to CO, and started rock and ice climbing. After a few years away I caught the racing bug again and was able to get some results in the 35+ category late this year.

During my time in the Pro 1-2 ranks it was hard to find a team that with same kind of camaraderie as back in my junior days. I'm excited to ride for Mix1 because of the team focus and fun environment. My main goal for next year is to help the team win the Best All Around Team for the 35+. If I get some results that's cool too.

Josh Barnett: I grew up in Tennessee and Illinois and moved to Colorado 10 years ago. I began racing as a Junior in 1988 and was quickly hooked. I raced my bike through college and into my early thirties working my way up to being a cat. 1 rider. My best results have come in crits, but I am a stronger climber than I give myself credit for, and can handle all around racing. I recently took several years off from racing in the pro1/2 category, but missed the competition side of the sport. I live in Longmont with my wife Sarah, daughter Julia and son Benjamin. I look forward to racing with a focused team and having Jim Thies work for me at every race.
