24 Hours Of Moab

Even though the road season ended a month ago the guys on the mix1 Masters Team try to keep the fitness up over the off season.  Last weekend was the 16th annual 24 Hours Of Moab mountain bike race in Moab, UT.  The race is generally a team event and goes from noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday, with the team doing the most laps winning (as a side note some riders do this race solo, but that is crazy).

35 Plus crit man CJ Gauss headed down for the weekend to race with some old friends, fly the mix1 flag, and because he heard the climbing was not too bad (he never had to use the little ring).  Here are a few photos from the race where CJ and his team took 2nd in the co-ed division and one nice shot from their camping area to show just how beautiful Moab is.  Better stay fit, the first race of 2011 is only 4 months away!

Steamboat Stage Race

The 2010 road season ended in grand style with the Steamboat Stage Race. It is a four race event over Labor Day weekend in Steamboat Springs, CO. The mix1 team dominated the event in all areas. In the 35 Plus race the boys won 3 of the 4 stages and took 1st, 2nd, and 4th overall. In the 45 Plus race the guys won 2 of the 4 stages and had to settled for 2nd and 3rd overall after an unfortunate event in the crit. We do not have a race report from the 35 Plus team, but Matt S won the TT, Matt G. won the Circuit race with Marc taking 2nd, Matt Gates also won the road race with Matt S taking second. Overall Matt Gates won the general classification, Matt Segur took second, and Marc Holbert took 4th.

Here is a race report on the 45 plus race from Peter:

There was plenty of success at the Steamboat Stage Race for the 45+Mix1 riders. The race had 4 stages: an opening short time trial, a hilly circuit race, a road race, and a final criterium. Peter and Jimi represented Mix1 for the 45+ category. The first day of racing started out good with Jimi taking 3rd in the time trial, while Peter followed it up with 4th. They both felt great about their results, especially Peter who traditionally never does well at time trials.

The second day got even better. Peter and Jimi road hard during the circuit race, riding hard up the climb on each lap. Eventually, they found themselves together with only one other rider. Without being able to drop the last rider, they had to take it to the line, with Peter getting 1st and Jimi getting 2nd. At this point Peter was first in General Classification (GC) and Jimi was in second.

Next up was the road race. As predicted, the wind picked up to 20mph, with 30 mph gusts as the afternoon went on. Jimi took control of the race and challenged all the other riders on every short hill and climb. He also led the chase into the wind to catch two riders who got out in front for a while. Once back together, 8 riders remained in the front group at the start of the final climbs. Unfortunately, Peter cramped up at the start of the climbs, being the first to drop off the group. But Jimi led the charge all the way to the top. He finished 1st, just ahead of a couple other riders. Now Jimi is in first GC, while Peter slipped to 3rd after losing a couple minutes on the final climb.

The final day was the criterium. Having gotten some good recovery the night before, Jimi and Peter were feeling good. Peter tested his legs out on a couple primes, not winning them, but holding back a bit to save strength for the finish. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worst for Jimi. This time it was his turn to cramp up about 2/3’sway through the race. Having to get off his bike a couple times to relieve the pain, he was lapped twice in the process. The cramping caused him to loose almost 3 1/2 minutes in the race, and he unfortunately fell to 3rd for the final GC. Peter finished second in the criterium, moving up to 2nd overall. It was an unfortunate ending to the race, but Mix1 had some great successes over the four days and still finished with two people on the podium at the end. Next year they will be back to get the top position. It was a great race with awesome courses and the race promoter did a great job of planning and holding the 4-day event. Can’t wait till next year.

Adopt A Road Fall Clean Up

2010 was our second year of participating in the Adopt A Road program here in Boulder. The program requires us to adopt a section of a roadway in Boulder County and do a spring and fall clean up of the road way. In return we get a sign at either end of the adopted road with our name on it. It has been a fun and rewarding project for our team, as the clean up is generally not too hard and the guys have fun working as a group doing something off the bike. Here is a photo from our fall clean up on September 11th. We had 7 team members and Pete Lucke's wife Chris was kind enough to help as well (and she took the picture). We plan to continue the Adopt A Road program in 2011 and will look to have a few more team members out for the spring 2011 clean up.

Nearly A Win At The State Champs

This weekend brought the state road championship for masters. At the last minute the race was moved from Estes Park to Deer Trail, where an annual spring race is also held. The resulting change meant the race would favor more of an all around rider and that the boys would be in for some serious heat. When the team arrived it was 92 degrees, with light winds and no shade in sight. There was also another course change that day which made the race shorter and faster. It was going to be a good fight for the 35 plus and 45 plus State Championships.

The 35 plus team lined up with five riders: CJ, Pete, Matt Gates, Matt Segur, and Marc Holbert. They knew they needed to mark pro level rider Paul Espoti (Scion), who has been selectively doing some masters races recently, and current Best All Around Rider leader, Jeff Hartman (Big Shark). The team got on the offensive early and put Pete in the initial three man break. This meant they were in the prime position as they did not need to attack, and could simply cover the other team's moves. A few small moves went up to the break and by the first turn around it was nine guys. The way back was the fastest stretch of the race, due to a tailwind, and the attacks from the big hitters started for real. All the guys took turns covering moves to protect Pete up the road, but eventually the key counter attack went with Paul Espoti and Tom Roba (prerace.com). Matt Gates covered the move perfectly and was able to get up to the break.

Back in the field, the remaining three mix1 riders helped shut things down. Jeff Hartman was not happy to be back there and attacked constantly even though he had a team mate up the road. The boys covered him like a blanket with Matt Segur doing most of the work. You could tell it was frustrating him, but it was an effective strategy. As we already had two guys in the break (Pete and Matt Gates) it was the thing to do. The break started to split up on the much harder second circuit and as they rode into the final lap of that circuit there were only four riders left, our Matt Gates, P. Espoti, T Roba, and Forrest Newman (Rio Grande). Those four would fight out the final placings. Forrest was the first to get dropped and then P. Espoti attacked with four to go. Roba could not respond, so Matt Gates went after Espoti and dropped Roba. Matt could not close down on Espoti, but hung on for second place. Espoti is really more of a pro level rider then a master, so Matt had a great result. The team had a nice sense of really taking "1st" place amongst the guys that really race masters. The field broke up a little more on the way in and Matt Segur took 12th, Marc Holbert took 16th, and Pete managed to finish after a long day in the break. Pete gets extra credit as he was in the break from the get go and the masters break actually passed the pro/1/2/3 field.

It was a solid day for the mix1 boys with a great result for Matt Gates. More importantly - they had a plan, they executed and used great team work. Matt Gates was also on the podium for the state Hill Climb Championships, so that makes two nice results for him.

Gene Palumbo Wins The WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TT!

Team member Gene Palumbo has made it well know that his 2 goals for 2010 were the US Maters National Championship and the World Master's Championship in the time trail. Gene has changed his training, worked with a new coach, updated his equipment, and fully committed to the goal. In early 2010 Gene won every single time trial he started, 7 in a row, plus a team time trail. Then one night at Cherry Creek disaster struck as a non racer took him out at full speed. Talking to Gene you knew he was disappointed and not sure how the season was going to go, but he never gave up. He rode the CO state TT with low expectations and took 2nd in his first race back. He went on to race the US National Champions and took a podium spot. Then off to worlds in late august. We tip our hat to Gene as he brought home the World Championship to the mix1 Masters team and to CO.

Gene dropped us a line from Europe and here is what he had to say:

Hey guys,

Yes, it is true and official - 2010 World Champion....thanks for all the emails, comments and support - I really appreciate it. Up until 12 minutes before my start time I was not going to race because my bike had some mechanical issues, but a few guys worked on it while I warmed up and got me to the line - whew, was that close. I ended up beating the defending champion by 1.24 seconds and first and third place were separated by only 1.7 seconds. Due to registration issues, a whole other story, I ended up first out of the start house for my age group. After I crossed the finish line I watched the leader board for over an hour waiting for other racers crossing the finish line to eclipse me and bump me off the podium...what torture it was for that 60 minutes waiting and watching. There were about 50 Americans and some other European friends standing there with my family and I as we watched and waited until the defending champion and some other fast guys finished without changing my #1 position. After the last guy crossed the line and the results were posted I knew I had won.

Here are the official UCI results:

mix1 at the Leadville Trail 100

We just saw this photo today on Facebook of the CEO of mix1, crossing the line at the famous Leadville Trail 100, and proudly rocking our team gear. Way to go and how cool is it to have a company where the CEO is so in tune with the product and "white collar" athletes. You da man!

Volunteering For Mavic at the 2010 Pro Crit Championship

Team member Marcel Van Garderen is not just a masters bike racer, dad to a pro tour rider, local architect, but he is also part of Mavic's elite neutral support program. It is a volunteer position, but one Marcel loves. He volunteers his time and works specific events for Mavic. He has done everything from major Pro Tour level US stage races, to local Colorado cyclocross races, to bike tours and this year he worked his first US Professional Crit Champs, in Chicago.

Below are some photos of Marcel sitting on the back of the lead support moto, in what is called "The Jumper" position. It is called that because when a rider needs help it is the Jumper's job to jump off the moto and help him. One rider needed so much help Marcel got off the moto and the driver just drove the rider to the pit to get a new bike! The middle photo is Marcel's moto following the winning break. Luckily the Mavic sponsored rider won! The last photo is Marcel, on the right, and his driver on the left. Thanks for all your volunteer work Marcel!

Air Force Academy RR - Another Victory

Jimi Gibson and the 45 Plus guys headed down to the Air Force Academy for the road race this past weekend. Here is Jimi's reports: although the course at the Air Force Academy was an out-and-back circuit with a loop at the top, it beat everyone's expectations and turned out to be a very good course and fun race. The 45+ peloton did only 4 laps on the course, but with the wind and hills, 4 was good enough for today.
The peloton stayed together on the first climb/lap as everyone was testing out the course and fitness. On the second climb, things got fast. Riders were surging off the front on the climb, eventually splitting the peloton into small groups. Peter I. and Jimi survived in the front group, while Jeff and Bill just barely missed getting into it. It was on the 3rd lap that Jimi made his move. On the climb, Peter pulled up in front of Jimi who was leading to give him a break from the wind. After a quick rest sitting in second, Jimi turned on the after burners and motored away from everyone, dropping his last chaser at the top of the climb. From there on it was all Jimi, opening up a lead to maybe 30 seconds at one point. Peter got to sit in behind the 7 chasers, licking his chops for a second place finish, being all rested and all. But that was not to be, he flatted with one lap to go.

Jimi still held off a very strong group of chasers to the very end. After getting a wheel, Peter slipped back to the next chase group, which had Jeff and Bill in it, all finishing 8th - 11th or so.
Great day for Mix1 getting Jimi on the top of the podium. The photo is Jimi on the podium.

BRE Real Estate Crit

This is a newer crit in Highands Ranch, south of Denver. Last year was the 1st year and it is a solid race, with a few corners, and a short, but steep kicker to the line. the 45 plus guys raced first today, for more BAT points, and the the 35's. With a good day the 45 Plus guys could effetely end the BAT race for 2010.

45 Plus race report from Peter I.: The 45+ race was fast enough today to not allow for any breaks to be maintained. The Mix1 guys pretty much covered all breaks through out the race. The guys rode well as a team near the front of the pack, taking a few turns on the front to stretch out the field along with some attacks. A headwind on one portion of the course seemed to help neutralize any escape attempts. The race came down to the last couple of laps. The Mix1 guys were taking turns countering and covering attacks. Eventually it all came together on the last 1/2 lap with a final sprint up the hill. Rod Yoder from Natural Grocers took the win after an awesome lead out by his teammate Bill. But Mix1 was able to stay near the front, and Jeff Ofsanko got on the podium in 3rd, while Chris Leggere got 5th, Peter I. 6th, Matt V. 9th, and Jimi brought up 15th.

The 35 plus guys lined up later in the afternoon with Matt G., Matt S. (back from Nats & a bad crash), CJ and Peter (back from Europe). The guys put 2 riders in the break last year at this race, so they decided to try again. The first half of the race was not too exciting, with lots of wind, and a few solo moves that did not worry the boys. Matt, Pete and Matt were all active at the front, while CJ surfed the back. About half way strong man Michale Gibson laid it down and that was the move. CJ made it across and the 4 man break was away. Eventually 3 other riders came up, including last week's winner Paul Espoti. With 2 to go Espoti attacked again, CJ gave chase, but no one pulled through, and that was it.

With the break racing for second CJ attacked the last corner and got into it first, but it was all uphill to the line. CJ ended up in a 3 way bike throw with Michael Gibson and Byron Nix, with CJ taking the short end of that deal and getting 4th. Matt Gates followed an attacked with 1 to go and was able to solo in for 8th place. Matt Segur kept the pace up in the pack and do to the hard work Pete took out the field sprint for 9th. So 3 guys in the top 9, not a bad day.

Bannock Crit

Bannock might just be the longest running bike race in Colorado. It is a figure 8 crit just south of downtown Denver. It is considered a classic and this year the racers were treated to new pavement between turns 1 and 2. The 45 plus guy raced first and only Jimi took the line. unfortunately for Jimi several other teams showed up in force. Not one to shy away from work, Jimi attacked and did what he could, but eventually the other team's size got the best of him and a break went up the road. That was the end of the race and Jimi rode in with the pack.

The 35 plus team lined up with CJ, Jim, LT, Josh and Marcel. It was an important race as it was the last BAT crit of the year and with a good result the boys could put away their first ACA Best All Around Team Title. It was also the last race of the year for Josh, Jim, LT, and Marcel.

Jim & Marcel got the party started with a 1 lap attack and went up the road. When that came back some solo moves went, then LT lead the fired out for a $100 cash prime. Eventually strong man Michael Gibson attacked and Josh was able to bridge up. When that move came back the pack had a bit of a lull, CJ sensed it and attacked solo. A Vic's riding joined CJ, they had a long way to go, but that was the winning move.

Paul Espoti came up to the break solo. Paul is an ex-professional who still races at the cat 1 level. Not sure why he was racing masters, but he tends to win any and all masters races he does. The 3 riders rode well together and the 2 strong teams left in the field, RMCEF & Grove Subaru, chased, and then had their main men Michael and Lance bridge to the break. Things got complicated in the break, the Vic's rider (Gary Molder) got dropped, and Michael and Lance played games. So with 4 to go CJ & Paul were away solo. They rode to the last corner, where Paul attacked and easily took the win. It was great result for CJ and he was not going to beat a guy who has been racing major races in Europe this summer. Josh got a jump on the field and won the field sprint for 3rd, giving the guys 2 on the podium. It was by far the boys best crit of the year and the result gave them the BAT win for 2010.

Photos are compliments of Karen Steele. The first one is CJ crossing the line, relieved it is over, the second one is just before, where you can see the field sprint unfolding, and the 3rd is one is the final sprint where CJ lost to Paul Espoti.

Masters Nationals TT, RR & Crit

Matt Segur and Gene Palumo made the trip from CO to Louisville, KY for the 2010 maters nationals. Here are reports on the races from then.

Gene's report on the TT: with a heat index of 101 degrees today is was a bit hot and humid if you can imagine. Of course, everyone had the same conditions to race in but it just got hotter and hotter, it seemed like, by the minute. Basically, we were all simply dripping wet, salty dogs seeking shade and liquids.

Podium at Natz goes 5 deep so I ended up on the podium in 4th place with a medal around my neck. As well, I got to share the podium with guys like 1st place Thurlow Rogers (multiple time World and Natz champ) and other multiple time Natz champs like John Novitsky, and Brian Batke, so I guess I should be happy with my performance in the presence of these icons...
Segur lined up about an hour earlier than I and I believe he ended up in 12th place. Didn't see Matt after the race so that is the only update I have for him.

I ran into some other Colorado racers such as Todd Robertson from Skins, Vic's guys Joe Paulson, Mike Newsome and Dean Sandoval as well as Jim Dickerson from Great Divide. Todd Robertson, Mike Newsome and Jim put in some fine times and finishes in their respective categories and finished on the podium in 3rd, 5th and 6th place respectively.
Matt is here for the road race and crit and I head back to Colorado tomorrow.

Matt Segur's TT report: bloody hot and humid! I felt as though I was riding through a swimming pool. Anyway, I raced this as planned and left nothing on the course. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be. I am hopeful the road race on Friday morning will go much better for me. I know who's wheel I will be on and am not going to let it go!

Matt Segur's Road Race report: Hot and humid again today in Louisville, but I prepared for it and with 76 other racers we put ourselves on the line for the Nationals Road Race. The race was full gas from the start with the likes of Olhieser tearing it apart on the first lap (he is the 2 time defending US Amateur Road Race Champ..............). Olhieser attacked on the second climb of the first lap of the course and took a few riders with him in a break, including the eventual 2nd place finisher. After the break was free it all attacking from the field for the next several laps as riders tried to get something else to get away.

I made a break at the half way point with two others but, we got caught with 3 laps to go of 14 lap race. At this point things settled a bit as the group tried to figure itself out. Although this did not deter opportunistic racers from trying to solo away, but they each quickly brought back in. With 1st and 2nd places secured up the road, I was in a select lead group that gaped the group on the windy false flat bottom of the course. This group was racing for 3rd place on the last lap, but I totally cracked on the last hill and sprint to the finish, cramping ,and red lined the field caught me. That constant jumping of wheels really took it out of me after my efforts in my break. I just had nothing left in the tank for the finale. That was the hardest race I've done in a long time. It was all survival in this race due to the constant attacking with significant attrition due to the speed of the race, the courses rolling terrain and the heat and humidity.
One more race to go, the criterium, on Sunday afternoon. Still a chance for me to reach a podium here at Nationals.

Matt's crit: Matt felt great in the crit, but was taken out in a crash. He hit the ground hard and his helmet really saved him. He wanted back in, but the medical staff said no way, due to the helmet damage. After the race ended Matt reflected and said the medical staff made the right call.

Salida Omnium

This is a long standing 3 day race held in the mountain town of Salida, CO. Typically there is a time trial on Friday night, a crit on Saturday and a road race on Sunday. The road race has a fair amount of climbing and tends to be the deciding factor. This year the 35 plus guys had a small team as only Matt Gates made it. Some of the other guys needed a rest and Matt Segur was at Nationals. The 45 plus guys showed up with a full team and were ready to battle.

Matt G rode a solid time trail and then got into the winning 4 man break in the crit. He put together a fantastic sprint in the crit, basically drifting through the finial coroner, and passing 2 riders in the last 50 meter, to take the win. The win also moved him into 2nd in the overall, but there were only a few points separating the top guys.

Matt's RR report: I went into the RR with a 1 point deficit on Jeff Hartman from Big Shark. Unfortunately the top of the climb came too far from the finish. Hartman attacked super hard on the last time up. I threw it in the big ring and hauled him back. In the process I rode Michael Gibson off my wheel, but he came back, yet it was fun to put him in the hurt locker. It was cat and mouse after that and three other guys caught back on during the decent. There was a tailwind on the finishing stretch and Hartman got the jump making it too difficult to come around. Gibson pipped me for second. Not a bad weekend overall and I took 2nd. Even though Matt was riding solo he manged to extend our BAT lead.

The 45's got the weekend off with a downer as their TT was cancelled. The skys had opened, there was standing water on the TT course and lightning everywhere. They went into the Saturday crit well rested and come out with a strong 2nd place for Jeff O. The rider who won was a crti only guy, and would not be starting the RR. So Jeff effectively had the race lead with only the RR to go.

Jeff's RR report: heading into today’s road race stage of the Salida Omnium, Mix 1 had two GC cards to play with Jeff leading the standings and Jimi sitting in third, while Great Divide’s Derrick Nichol was positioned in second. Given the amount of climbing on the stage, Jimi was Plan A. If Jimi could escape without Derrick on his wheel, he’d been a lock for the overall and Jeff would have happily handed over the GC honors to his teammate. Alternatively, if Jimi’s efforts failed and Jeff managed to survive the day’s seven climbs, a sprint victory over Derrick would also win the GC for Mix 1. Unfortunately, the shorter climbs in this year’s race combined with a slight headwind to negate Jimi’s efforts to try and escape on the climbs. In addition, after each climb it became more and more apparent that if Jimi could escape with a small group, that group would most likely have been him, Derrick, and Derrick’s teammate Karl Kiester. Perhaps Peter could have made the split but after yesterday’s crash Peter was too far back in the standings to have made an impact on the GC.

With Plan B starting to look like the best option, Jeff put it into full on survival mode for the day’s final two climbs. He would start the climbs near the front, sink to the back on the steep parts, each shit big time to hang on on the false flats, move up on the short descents and repeat the process until finished. After Jeff made it over the day’s final climb, all was set for Plan B. Divide’s Karl Kiester led out the slightly uphill, slight head winds print with Derrick on his wheel. With about 200 meters to go Karl pulled off and Jeff jumped getting a quick gap on Derrick. Derrick clawed his way back, but was still behind Jeff when Jeff (starting to spin out) dropped to a bigger gear that he never quite got on top of. Derrick took the sprint by a half wheel and with the day’s victory also claimed the overall. Jeff added another second to go with his second from the day before and placed second on the GC. Jimi placed 4th in the sprint and 4th overall while Matt V finished 5th on theGC. Today’s tip of the hat goes to Great Divide’s Derrick Nichol. We went into this race with two solid options for the overall and gave them both our best shot. Yet, Derrick managed to keep pace with our best climber and to out kick our fastest finisher. Strong work Derrick.

Photos are from Pete I. Frist one is Matt Gates taking the win in the 35 plus crit. Second one is Matt Gates riding in the break. The third photo is Jeff from the 45 plus team telling everyone he could how excited he was about scoring a parking spot so close to the port-o-potties. As you can tell Jeff is a veteran!

Coal Miner's Classic Crit

The Coal Miner Classic has become a popular race with the team and in 2009 the 35 Plus guys pulled off a win with a well executed race plan, and some solid sprinting from Kevin Anderberg. Kevin is not racing this year, but the boys wanted a win again. For 2010 Jim, CJ, Josh, Marcel, and Matt S raced this event, with both Jim and Matt S. racing the day before at Mt Evans.

In 2009 this race was single file for most of the event, with the power house Excel Sports team keeping the pressure on. The race was not as hard this year and mix1 had one of the larger teams. Jim Thies showed no signs of being tired and got up the road early. Unfortunately he was solo and this course was not going to favor a solo break. Other moves went with a solo rider from Vic's and combinations that did not worry the boys. CJ & Josh did not feel great so they sat in and hoped for a field sprint. Jim rode the front a lot, Marcel was also up there and Matt Segur really took over the last 5 laps.

With 3 to go a 2 man break was up the road, but only by a few second and it was not gaining time. So the field played cat and mouse and caught them right at the bell. Vic's attacked again, but it was a suicide mission, so everyone lined up for a field sprint. Marcel lead it out for Josh and Josh went toe to toe with Bob Dahl from Excel. In the end Bob got the best of Josh and it was a reversal of 2009, when Kevin beat Bob by an inch. CJ came in 8th and Jim Thies in 11th. All in all a solid day, but still not the victory the team had hopped for.

In the photos below: Matt Segur riding on the front, Josh taking a free lap after blowing out a tire on a massive hole in the last corner (CJ blew out a tire on the same hole the lap before), and CJ & Marcel riding at the front.

Mt Evans - CO State Hill Climb Champs

For at least the second year in a row Mt. Evans was the Colorado State Hill Climb Championship. For anyone who does not know, this climb is legendary. It is 28 miles of pain, that goes to the top of the highest paved road in the United States, and tops out around 14,000 feet. For most masters racers it is a 2 to 2.5 hour death march. We do have one defending champion in Jimi Gibson, who won the 45 plus race in 2009.

For 2010 the 35 plus squad was deep with guys who names start with M, Matt Gates, Marc Holbert, and Matt Segur. They would not disappoint as by the top of the hill all 3 of them would be in the top 6, with Matt Gates making the podium in 3rd place. They were sorry to miss out on the win, but it was an incredible show of depth for 3 guys.

In the 45 plus race Jimi Gibson did his magic and won the race for the second time in a row. Congratulations Jimi. Big Ring Bill came through close behind in 5th and Matt V. in 11th.

State Crit Champs - Prospect

Saturday brought the state masters crit championship for the second year in a row on the newer Prospect course, in Longmont. This is a very short, very tight course, with laps times close to a minute. As a result only the strong survive and you have to race this race from the front. Both the 35 and the 45 brought strong teams and high hopes.

45 Plus race report from Jeff O: The 45+ers went into the day’s big event with a basic (but solid and proven...especially when you're the biggest team in the race) plan, but fell victim to poor execution. The plan was to ensure that no breaks went up the road without a Mix 1 rider present by either initiating attacks, following an attack or from bridging. Any move without a Mix1 rider present was to be brought back by the team. Since Jeff has been in several breaks with some of the 45+’s strongest riders this season, he offered to “mark the races big guns such as Derrick Nichol.”

Having recognized that marking the big guns alone will not suffice and opportunities would be present for all, Jeff offered encouragement to the rest of the team to not be shy marking some of the other riders in the race. From Jeff’s pre-race plan email: “I think some of those other moves provide great opportunities for some of ya'll…Ya'll are strong riders and I'm confident you can handle these moves....and by doing so this just might put ya in a good position."

The race started off fairly hard with some solo attacks and after 10 minutes Great Divide’s former state crit champ Derrick Nichol went out on his own. True to his word, Jeff bridged up to the move and although Derrick and Jeff were able to stretch their lead out to about 20 seconds they were eventually reeled in. After that Jeff dropped to mid pack to reload when one of those other opportunities he mentioned in the pre-race plan presented itself as Great Divide’s Karl Kiester went on a solo move. Despite having 6 riders in the race Mix 1 missed the move.

Recognizing that no teammates were responding to the solo move and knowing the danger of allowing someone up the road on such a tight course Jeff started moving towards the front to get into position to bridge. Unfortunately his tire blew spectacularly in turn 5 (check out the video on http://www.303cycling.com/ from a rider behind Jeff with a helmet cam) leaving him sliding across the pavement. After a stop to the wheel pit, Jeff jumped back into the main group which was now minus Kiester whose lead was up to about 25 seconds.

From that point on, Jimi chased for a while and after getting his wits back from sliding across the pavement, Jeff was back on the front looking for another bridge move. However, it was never his day as he flatted once again (this time on the spare ROL wheel he received from the neutral wheel pit). With this second flat coming within the final 8K of the race, he was no longer able to get a free lap and abandoned the race with 6K to go.

In the end, Kiester stayed away and GD scored the W in the biggest race of the season and with Derrick Nichol’s second in the field sprint, GD put two riders on the state championship podium. Meanwhile Chris L took 5th and all of our riders finished in the main group.

35 Plus race report from CJ: in 2009 this was one of the hardest races with 2 ex National Professional Champs and plenty of extra pro/cat 1 talent to help keep it single file for an hour. This year the field was smaller and not as deep, but the talent pool was still serious at the top. Unlike last year the race was not single file from the gun. Lots of back and fourth attacking gave everyone a chance to feel each other out. CJ got up the road early with ex-pro Chuck Coyle who has won plenty of pro/1/2 races this year (why do these guys even bother racing masters?) and Chuck whittled the move down to 3 guys. Defending champ Michael Gibson did not want that to go and countered up to the move and that was really the race. Jim Thies made the new move, along with Michael Gibson, the always strong and super nice guy Danny Sullivan, Roba from pro/1 team prerace.com, Jeff Hartman, and Jon Baker fresh off a NRC win a few weeks ago.

Will all the teams represented, but Rio, the move went up the road and CJ & Matt did a good job blocking. The pack lacked the teams to chase, Rio tried, as did Rocky Mounts and Peleton Cycles. About half way through the break lapped the field and Jim was assured at least 7th place or better. As soon as the break lapped the field 3 of the guys from the break went again and got away. Team sprinter Josh Barnett covered this and they were gone. The already mentioned Chuck Coyle missed this moved and bridged up with one other rider, while CJ made this move too and sat on for a free ride to the break. Eventually these 7 guys got away and were gone for good.

At this point it was a little complicated for the spectators as 4 guys in the 7 man break were 1.5 laps up on the field. Then places 5 through 7 were still in the field, including our own Jim Thies, then 8th to 10th were in the break (including CJ & Josh), with the rest of the field sprinting for 11th. Josh won from his group taking 8th, CJ took 10th in the break, and Jim took 6th in the field. All in all the guys missed the win, but had 3 guys in the top 10 and in front the Rio riders. A big shout out to Jim Thies for making the move, for lapping the field and a fine 6th place result.

Boulder Centurion

This is a new event this year and is part of the trend towards Grand Fondo's. What is a Grand Fondo? Glad you asked. They are part race, part bike ride/tour. The idea is there is no real separation of categories, everyone starts at once, from pro, to first time participant. So it gives a way for any rider to try out the big time. They are popular in Europe and starting to get off the ground here in the state. This one started in Lyons CO, about 15 miles north of Boulder. The race features a 100 mile course, that was basically 2 loops, with over 9,000 feet of climbing, and some dirt roads. Four riders from the team started the 100 mile event, Matt S., Matt G., Peter I., and Jimi. Matt G. was the team's top finish in 11th overall and Jimi came in 21st, but also won his age category of 50 to 54. What a stud!

For more info on the event check out their web site:

Here is Matt G's race report: Matt S, Matt G, Jimi, and Peter lined up for 100 mile Centurion Race featuring two trips up to Peak to Peak Hwy - one up through Ward and the second via Super James. It was a nervous start to the race as some miles were spent on the flats before heading up Left Hand Canyon. All Mix1 riders massed near the front as the peloton rolled up Left Hand Canyon. A tailwind made the climbs very fast and by the time we hit the steeps at Ward the pack was halved. Everything splintered through Ward with 7 riders riding off the front. Matt G and Jimi came through in the second group which swelled to about 12-14 riders.

With guys sitting on the chase was really slow. By Lyons the break had 5 minutes. As the group went up to Jamestown for the second major climb three riders from the break were caught as things detonated up front. Jimi set good tempo to Jamestown which set up Matt G for the Super James climb. The group shattered on Super James. Matt G came over the climb in good shape and was just behind three riders when he crashed in the dirt section. As it turns out 5th place came out of that group. At the end of the day Matt G ended up 11th and Jimi won his age group despite cramping on Super James. Matt S and Peter came across in fine shape too .

Here is Peter I's race report: 400+ starters, but when we got to Left Hand Canyon, maybe down to 60 riders. The hard racing started on the steeps before Ward, where Matt, Jimi, and Matt stuck with the first chase group, or maybe they were actually with them. I slid to the second chase. Matt Gates did great. He had Nico and Jon Baker in his sights at the top Super James, but skidded out in the dirt. Still finishing 11th. Matt Segur hung in there with the chase group as well, but went down somewhat hard in the dirt as well. I caught up to him after he got up regaining his composure. We both dealt with some cramping on the rollers, but got our acts together to ride down the canyon strong and finish together 39-40th.

Before that we were quite the pair trying to get to the downhill. Matt had a pretty bent rear der and was lucky it wasn't completely ripped off at one point. I finished 5th/61 for the 45-50 group. As mentioned Jimi won his category, even after cramping right on Super James. 21st overall. He stayed with the chase group till the cramps came home to roost. Hardest day of racing ever for me. Quite the sufferfest on Super James. It is all I can do to type this message right now, Time to kick back and recover for Mt. Evans.

Longmont Crit

The Longmont Crit is another front range classic that has been used for many state championships over the years. This year was no different, but it was the Senior State Championships, so it meant reduced level of masters racing (too bad as it is a great course). There was a 45 plus race, but nothing for the 35 plus guys who are cat. 1's and cat. 2's. As such CJ and Pete decided to step it up a notch and do the pro/1/2 race for the state champs.

It was Pete last race for a while, as he is flying out to go to the Tour. Pete got a bad start and was stuck in the back. That was fine for a while, but the field was over 100 guys (twice the size of the field the day before in the 35 plus race). Relatively soon the rain started to fall and the back was a very bad place to be. Soon the race split in half and as Pete found himself in the back half he decided to drop out. Smart more with a flight to Europe this week.

CJ got a good start and was able to ride at the front for a long time. He even got a little frisky and went off the front in a move of 8 guys, following the advice of team mate Jim Thies "when you are going to get your rear end kicked, you might as well throw the first punch". Thing settled in and the rain started to pour. The race was safe consider the rain, it stopped for a while, then started again worse. It was one of the those days where glasses, no glasses, eyes open, or closed, it did not matter. There was a powerhouse 4 man break away for a lot of the race, but it never got more than 30 seconds. Some of the big teams who had missed the move chased it down and as we hit 6 to go we had the break in sight. This meant the last 6 laps were going to be the fastest of the race. CJ hung though and finished 22nd, which was solid when you consider 100 guys stated, and only 43 finished.

All photos from www.303cycling.com and www.prerace.com. First photo is CJ riding at the front as fellow master rider Michael Gibson takes the lead. Second photo is just to give you an idea of how bad the weather was. Last photo if CJ after the rain ended. All the Mix1 CJ is drinking is going to his calves!

North Boulder Park

The classic North Boulder Park Crit was held this past Saturday. It has been around for nearly 30 years and is a race not to be missed. The Vic's team has won the 45 Plus race the last 3 years, but a small group of Mix1 riders were out to change that. In the 35 Plus race Excel has won the race 2 years in a row and boys in red looked to change that too.

Here is the race report on the 45 Plus race from Peter I: the Mix1 45+ guys had 3 guys in the North Boulder Park Crit, Larry,Chris L. and Peter. They were ready for early break attempts from the gun. Several attempts were made by other teams, but nothing stuck. Peter and Chris rode on or near the front for most of the race, while Larry was solid in the pack. The race eased up later on once it was realized that no one was going to escape successfully. The pace picked up the last few laps as other teams took some turns on the front. Peter and Chris took some turns on the front as well to cover any late breaks, aware that Larry was not far back.

On the last lap Peter stayed protected, but was forced to the front after "the alley" to avoid getting swarmed by the group. Joe Paulson from Vics came around Peter on the last straight section and took the win. Peter hung on for 2nd, Chris and Larry (getting caught behind another rider's dropped chain) finished 9th and 17th. Joe Paulson did a good job of positioning himself in the right spot for the final sprint. It was a fun race, no crashes, and everyone still got a good work out despite no successful breakaways.

CJ's race report for the 35: we lined up 6 guys (CJ, Matt G, Jim, Marcel, Pete, and Josh) and decided we wanted to be aggressive as this race has ended in a break the last 2 years. Josh and Jim covered the early moves along with Pete. About 10 minutes in a move went up the left side and it was CJ's turn to go. He ended up getting away with Keith Harper from the very strong Hotel San Jose Team and local cat. 1 stud, and new dad, Max Clausen (prerace.com). It took a few laps, but they 3 of them got it together and started to extend their lead. This was a perfect move for the guys, as it allowed uber sprinter Josh to sit on, Matt G. rode the front to cover any moves, and it put the pressure on the other teams.

With about 20 minutes to go it looked like this was the winning move, but alas it was not to be. Several individual riders got excited and started to chase and the team of ex-professional Michael Carter also went to work. They brought the break back much to CJ's disappointment and ex-professional Carter launched the winning move solo. The field eventually sprinted in for 2nd place, with Josh taking 4th in the sprint and 5th in the race. It was a day where the boys did everything right, but it just did not work out as well as it could have.

Photo 1: Jim leading Josh into the only right hand turn, photo 2: Jim exiting the alleyway, photo 3: CJ in his 3 man break with Max and Keith, photo 4: Peter and Chris on the front of the 45 plus race, and photo 5: Pete on the podium.
