The Mix1 Masters Cycling Team is pleased to announce they have added 2 new riders to their 35 Plus squad for 2009, with the addition of Josh Barnett and Matt Gates. Josh is a long time Colorado racer, who has raced for years with several current members of our team (CJ, Jim & Larry), and is coming back to racing after a few years off while starting a family. Matt is newer to Colorado, but if you ask him, he is never leaving. He comes from a strong race background and several current members noticed Matt on local group rides and end of the season races.
Here is some more information from both Josh and Matt, in their own words:
Matt Gates: I started racing as a junior back in 1989 and was fortunate to race for an awesome team that employed team tactics. We won almost every race we entered because we rode as a team. I took some time off for school and then came back and raced as a Cat. 1 from 1994 until 2005. Then I 'retired', moved out to CO, and started rock and ice climbing. After a few years away I caught the racing bug again and was able to get some results in the 35+ category late this year.
During my time in the Pro 1-2 ranks it was hard to find a team that with same kind of camaraderie as back in my junior days. I'm excited to ride for Mix1 because of the team focus and fun environment. My main goal for next year is to help the team win the Best All Around Team for the 35+. If I get some results that's cool too.
Josh Barnett: I grew up in Tennessee and Illinois and moved to Colorado 10 years ago. I began racing as a Junior in 1988 and was quickly hooked. I raced my bike through college and into my early thirties working my way up to being a cat. 1 rider. My best results have come in crits, but I am a stronger climber than I give myself credit for, and can handle all around racing. I recently took several years off from racing in the pro1/2 category, but missed the competition side of the sport. I live in Longmont with my wife Sarah, daughter Julia and son Benjamin. I look forward to racing with a focused team and having Jim Thies work for me at every race.
