2011 Kits

24 Hours Of Moab

 Even though the road season ended a month ago the guys on the mix1 Masters Team try to keep the fitness up over the off season.  Last weekend was the 16th annual 24 Hours Of Moab mountain bike race in Moab, UT.  The race is generally a team event and goes from noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday, with the team doing the most laps winning (as a side note some riders do this race solo, but that is crazy).

35 Plus crit man CJ Gauss headed down for the weekend to race with some old friends, fly the mix1 flag, and because he heard the climbing was not too bad (he never had to use the little ring).  Here are a few photos from the race where CJ and his team took 2nd in the co-ed division and one nice shot from their camping area to show just how beautiful Moab is.  Better stay fit, the first race of 2011 is only 4 months away!

Marcel's son racing Pro Worlds This Weekend

Steamboat Stage Race

The 2010 road season ended in grand style with the Steamboat Stage Race. It is a four race event over Labor Day weekend in Steamboat Springs, CO. The mix1 team dominated the event in all areas. In the 35 Plus race the boys won 3 of the 4 stages and took 1st, 2nd, and 4th overall. In the 45 Plus race the guys won 2 of the 4 stages and had to settled for 2nd and 3rd overall after an unfortunate event in the crit. We do not have a race report from the 35 Plus team, but Matt S won the TT, Matt G. won the Circuit race with Marc taking 2nd, Matt Gates also won the road race with Matt S taking second. Overall Matt Gates won the general classification, Matt Segur took second, and Marc Holbert took 4th.

Here is a race report on the 45 plus race from Peter:

There was plenty of success at the Steamboat Stage Race for the 45+Mix1 riders. The race had 4 stages: an opening short time trial, a hilly circuit race, a road race, and a final criterium. Peter and Jimi represented Mix1 for the 45+ category. The first day of racing started out good with Jimi taking 3rd in the time trial, while Peter followed it up with 4th. They both felt great about their results, especially Peter who traditionally never does well at time trials.

The second day got even better. Peter and Jimi road hard during the circuit race, riding hard up the climb on each lap. Eventually, they found themselves together with only one other rider. Without being able to drop the last rider, they had to take it to the line, with Peter getting 1st and Jimi getting 2nd. At this point Peter was first in General Classification (GC) and Jimi was in second.

Next up was the road race. As predicted, the wind picked up to 20mph, with 30 mph gusts as the afternoon went on. Jimi took control of the race and challenged all the other riders on every short hill and climb. He also led the chase into the wind to catch two riders who got out in front for a while. Once back together, 8 riders remained in the front group at the start of the final climbs. Unfortunately, Peter cramped up at the start of the climbs, being the first to drop off the group. But Jimi led the charge all the way to the top. He finished 1st, just ahead of a couple other riders. Now Jimi is in first GC, while Peter slipped to 3rd after losing a couple minutes on the final climb.

The final day was the criterium. Having gotten some good recovery the night before, Jimi and Peter were feeling good. Peter tested his legs out on a couple primes, not winning them, but holding back a bit to save strength for the finish. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worst for Jimi. This time it was his turn to cramp up about 2/3’sway through the race. Having to get off his bike a couple times to relieve the pain, he was lapped twice in the process. The cramping caused him to loose almost 3 1/2 minutes in the race, and he unfortunately fell to 3rd for the final GC. Peter finished second in the criterium, moving up to 2nd overall. It was an unfortunate ending to the race, but Mix1 had some great successes over the four days and still finished with two people on the podium at the end. Next year they will be back to get the top position. It was a great race with awesome courses and the race promoter did a great job of planning and holding the 4-day event.Can’t wait till next year.

Adopt A Road Fall Clean Up

2010 was our second year of participating in the Adopt A Road program here in Boulder. The program requires us to adopt a section of a roadway in Boulder County and do a spring and fall clean up of the road way. In return we get a sign at either end of the adopted road with our name on it. It has been a fun and rewarding project for our team, as the clean up is generally not too hard and the guys have fun working as a group doing something off the bike. Here is a photo from our fall clean up on September 11th. We had 7 team members and Pete Lucke's wife Chris was kind enough to help as well (and she took the picture). We plan to continue the Adopt A Road program in 2011 and will look to have a few more team members out for the spring 2011 clean up.

Nearly A Win At The State Champs

This weekend brought the state road championship for masters. At the last minute the race was moved from Estes Park to Deer Trail, where an annual spring race is also held. The resulting change meant the race would favor more of an all around rider and that the boys would be in for some serious heat. When the team arrived it was 92 degrees, with light winds and no shade in sight. There was also another course change that day which made the race shorter and faster. It was going to be a good fight for the 35 plus and 45 plus State Championships.

The 35 plus team lined up with five riders: CJ, Pete, Matt Gates, Matt Segur, and Marc Holbert. They knew they needed to mark pro level rider Paul Espoti (Scion), who has been selectively doing some masters races recently, and current Best All Around Rider leader, Jeff Hartman (Big Shark). The team got on the offensive early and put Pete in the initial three man break. This meant they were in the prime position as they did not need to attack, and could simply cover the other team's moves. A few small moves went up to the break and by the first turn around it was nine guys. The way back was the fastest stretch of the race, due to a tailwind, and the attacks from the big hitters started for real. All the guys took turns covering moves to protect Pete up the road, but eventually the key counter attack went with Paul Espoti and Tom Roba (prerace.com). Matt Gates covered the move perfectly and was able to get up to the break.

Back in the field, the remaining three mix1 riders helped shut things down. Jeff Hartman was not happy to be back there and attacked constantly even though he had a team mate up the road. The boys covered him like a blanket with Matt Segur doing most of the work. You could tell it was frustrating him, but it was an effective strategy. As we already had two guys in the break (Pete and Matt Gates) it was the thing to do. The break started to split up on the much harder second circuit and as they rode into the final lap of that circuit there were only four riders left, our Matt Gates, P. Espoti, T Roba, and Forrest Newman (Rio Grande). Those four would fight out the final placings. Forrest was the first to get dropped and then P. Espoti attacked with four to go. Roba could not respond, so Matt Gates went after Espoti and dropped Roba. Matt could not close down on Espoti, but hung on for second place. Espoti is really more of a pro level rider then a master, so Matt had a great result. The team had a nice sense of really taking "1st" place amongst the guys that really race masters. The field broke up a little more on the way in and Matt Segur took 12th, Marc Holbert took 16th, and Pete managed to finish after a long day in the break. Pete gets extra credit as he was in the break from the get go and the masters break actually passed the pro/1/2/3 field.

It was a solid day for the mix1 boys with a great result for Matt Gates. More importantly - they had a plan, they executed and used great team work. Matt Gates was also on the podium for the state Hill Climb Championships, so that makes two nice results for him.
